The concept of Earth Day was proposed in September 1969 by Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin. He called for a spring time grassroots movement to support and call attention to the environment. On April 22, 1970 20 million people participated in the world's first "with a goal of healthy sustainable environment."
