Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds dies

?
LONDON, England (CNN) -- The childhood friend of John Lennon's son who inspired the Beatles' psychedelic masterpiece "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" has died aged 46 from the chronic disease Lupus.

Lucy Vodden was a classmate of Julian Lennon, who came home from school one day carrying a drawing of his 4-year-old classmate. "That's Lucy in the sky with diamonds," he told his father.

Lennon seized on the image and embellished it in a song along with "newspaper taxis" and a "girl with kaleidoscope eyes."

The BBC later banned the track, which appeared on the 1967 album "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," for its supposed drug reference with the words of the song spelling out LSD.

Lennon always claimed though that the title was suggested by Julian, not from any wish to spell out LSD, the chemical name for the drug, acid, in code.

Julian Lennon lost touch with Vodden when he left Heath House nursery school, near his parents' home in Surrey following their divorce in 1968. But they were reunited in recent years when he heard she was suffering from the immune system disease and he lent his support to her.

Vodden's death was announced on Monday by St. Thomas Lupus Trust in London, where she had been treated for more than five years.

"Julian and (his mother) Cynthia are shocked and saddened by the loss of Lucy and their thoughts are with her husband and family today and always," the trust said on its Web site.

Angie Davidson, Campaign Director of the St. Thomas' Lupus Trust said "everyone at the Louise Coote Lupus Unit was dreadfully shocked by the death of Lucy, she was a great supporter of ours and a real fighter, it's so sad that she has finally lost the battle she fought so bravely for so long."

Vodden, who was a housewife from Surbiton, southwest of London, cherished her link to the Beatles, but did not especially like the song she inspired.

"I don't relate to the song, to that type of song," she told The Associated Press in June, according to the Web site, PopEater.

"As a teenager, I made the mistake of telling a couple of friends at school that I was the Lucy in the song and they said, 'No, it's not you, my parents said it's about drugs.' And I didn't know what LSD was at the time, so I just kept it quiet, to myself."

FDA to regulate tobacco

?
uh does anyone see how much a pack of Parliaments cost at this newsstand?!
Stephen made a great comment "how do you regulate a deadly product?"
I don't know STS but i'm banking the world of placebo cigarettes is not to far away. I know the first thing they'll do is get rid of "light" and "ultra light" tags on boxes...maybe a skull and crossbones on boxes? The thing i find most ironic: if government really wanted to get rid of cigs they could easily make them illegal like they did alcohol, like they do with other drugs. But noo why get rid of precious tax money, lets just pretend to care enough to cut back on health care cost

Senate Votes To Allow FDA To Regulate Tobacco

AP, June 11, 2009 · Congress struck the government's strongest anti-smoking blow in decades Thursday as the Senate voted to give regulators new power to limit nicotine in cigarettes, drastically curtail ads and ban candied tobacco products aimed at young people.

Cigarette foes say the changes could cut into the 400,000 deaths every year caused by smoking and reduce the $100 billion in annual health care costs linked to tobacco.

The legislation, one of the most dramatic anti-smoking initiatives since the U.S. surgeon general's warning 45 years ago that tobacco causes lung cancer, would give the Food and Drug Administration authority to regulate the content, marketing and advertising of cigarettes and other tobacco products.

"This legislation represents the strongest action Congress has ever taken to reduce tobacco use, the leading preventable cause of death in the United States," declared Matthew Myers, president of Campaign for Tobacco-free Kids.

The 79-17 Senate vote sends the measure back to the House, which in April passed a similar but not identical version. House acceptance of the Senate bill would send it directly to President Obama, who supports the action. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that "from what I have seen so far, I believe it will be possible for us to accept their bill and send it right on to the president."

Obama's signature would then add tobacco to other huge, nationally important areas that have come under greater government supervision since his presidency began. Those include banking, housing and autos. Still to come, if Congress can agree: health care.

sorry guys i thought i published a post about the Bar Louie 2009 Rock the Tots competition last night. Yours truly was a paramedic and i am happy to report that no one died!
Congrats to Jared for winning the BL employee TTEC and Congrats to Big Bess on winning the overall TTEC by eating 2.8 pounds of tater tots.

On another note. I am gearing up to work with the guys at That Fresh Radio Piece to host a show on renters rights and the lack there of. We recently discovered that our house is being foreclosed on because our landlord Licensed Long and Foster Agent Charles "Chuck" Bailey intentionally did so. What did he do with the money? That doesn't matter. The fact is someone sought to took their negative karma and passed it onto others and across the country honest people are being screwed over by greedy predators out for their self interest. There are few rights protecting renters and that must change. Renters need justice, and the dishonest unAmericans who are taking advantage of their neighbors need to be called out, abashed.
